Traveling with CBD oil: Can I fly with CBD oil? - Leaf Remedys

Your bags are packed, you’ve got your favorite neck pillow in hand, and the perfect playlist queued up to help you relax as you fly to your next destination.

But just as you enter the TSA security checkpoint, it hits you...

“Oh no… My CBD oil is in my carry-on!”

Your mind begins to race…

“Will they make me throw away my CBD? I can’t fly without it. CBD is the only thing that helps me calm down. What if they throw me in jail because I have Full Spectrum CBD?”

If you’re planning your next trip and worried this might happen to you, then you’ve stumbled across the right article.

In fact, we can’t tell you how many times we've been asked, “Can I fly with CBD oil?”

Flying with CBD oil

The answer: Yes, you can fly with CBD oil. But it depends…

While the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived CBD on a federal level [¹], traveling with CBD oil was still highly frowned upon by the TSA for a while.

This is because the TSA had no way of knowing whether a passenger's CBD oil was truly hemp-derived or not.

But as more people brought awareness to flying with CBD, the TSA’s policy has since drastically changed.

In fact, in April of 2019, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) made this post on their official Instagram page [²]:

“Are we cool?

We like to think we’re cool.

We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow.

Let us be blunt: TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement. This includes items that are used for medicinal purposes.”

This is great news for those who rely on high quality, federally legal CBD products for their medical and personal needs.

There’s just one issue…

If the state that you’re flying to, or out of, considers your CBD product to be illegal, then you might have a bigger problem on your hands.

For instance, CBD products can’t contain any amount of THC in Idaho. Which means full spectrum CBD products are a huge no-no. Be sure to research CBD laws by state.

Again, this doesn’t mean the TSA will prohibit you from flying with your CBD oil. It just means that you may have some issues once you land in a state that has strict CBD laws.

Now let’s talk about international travel...

Can you travel with CBD oil internationally?

The rules and regulations of international travel and CBD are a bit more complicated and unclear.

Certain countries are more strict when it comes to cannabis products, regardless of whether that product is hemp-derived and non-psychoactive.

We recommend erring on the side of caution and either leaving your CBD products at home, or contacting the international airline to see what they suggest.

Nevertheless, research your destination’s laws regarding all things cannabis.

Final thoughts on Traveling with CBD

Thankfully, the TSA isn’t out to get your hemp-derived CBD when you want to fly.

That said, if you’re wanting to fly with your CBD, consider flying with CBD gummies.

While we understand CBD oil is perhaps the best value for your buck, CBD gummies may be the most travel-friendly products on the market today. Not only are they pre-dosed, but they’re the least likely to create a mess in your travel bag or carry-on.

In any case, the next time you book your next flight, you can approach the TSA checkpoint with complete confidence that your hemp-derived CBD is safe and sound.
