CBD Oil for Kids: A Parent’s Must Read! - Leaf Remedys

As parents, seeing our children battle physical health issues or mental health problems can be gut wrenching. Especially when pharmaceutical drugs and professional treatments don’t always help.

Most prescription drugs only work for a limited time before doses have to be increased and side effects start setting in. Before you know it, your child is taking multiple medications that address everything except the root cause of their health problems.

Thankfully, there is a less invasive, more natural approach… It’s called Cannabidiol, or CBD for short.

What is CBD for children

CBD is a phytocannabinoid extracted from either hemp or marijuana. While its origin may seem alarming to some, CBD is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid and will not get your child “high”.

In fact, studies show that higher ratios of CBD can actually counteract the effects of THC (the cannabinoid responsible for getting it’s users high) [¹].

What’s more, scientists and doctors have found CBD’s medicinal properties to be so beneficial for children, that they finally received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create the first plant-derived, synthetic free, cannabinoid-based oral medication –– Epidiolex [²].

Not only is Epidiolex a highly effective prescription medication that treats rare forms of epilepsy and seizures in children, but it was developed after anecdotal evidence of CBD reached the mainstream media.

CBD for epilepsy in children

Charlotte Figi [³] was only 3 months old when she first began suffering from epileptic seizures.

Once doctors diagnosed her with Dravet syndrome (a rare form of epilepsy found in children), little Charlotte was experiencing more than 300 seizures every week.

She was taking over a dozen medications, none of which addressed the root cause of her condition. And she began developing side effects from these medications.

Afraid of losing their little girl, Charlotte’s parents turned to CBD. Though at the time they had no idea what this cannabinoid was, they just knew that CBD and THC were two entirely different cannabinoids. So they administered CBD high, THC low oil to their little girl, and the results were mind-boggling.

Little Charlotte went from 300 seizures per week to less than three seizures per month.

Her story not only paved the way for the highly profitable hemp industry we see today, but it convinced GW Pharmaceuticals to conduct their own studies, thus creating Epidiolex.

But CBD isn’t just known for treating rare forms of epilepsy…

CBD oil for kids with anxiety

One case study, involving a sexually abused 10 year old girl, credits high-quality CBD oil in reducing the symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) [⁴].

Not only did the CBD address her insomnia, anxiety, aggression, and self-destructive behaviors, but it gave her grandmother (her new legal guardian) her life back as well. In her grandmother’s words:

“My granddaughter’s behaviors are definitely better being on CBD. Her anxiety is not gone, but it is not as intense and she is much easier to be around. She now sleeps in her own room most of the time, which has never happened before.”

Is CBD safe for kids?

While multiple studies show that CBD has a safe profile and is well tolerated among users [⁵], there are a few rare side effects [⁶] to look out for:

  • Increased blood levels
  • Nausea
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue

It’s best to consult with a pediatrician if you’re interested in giving CBD to your child. They can help monitor their blood and liver enzyme levels and reduce the dose of any current medications.

If you’re considering CBD for kids, be sure to only purchase high-quality CBD products from reputable companies who care about your child's health.
