CBD and Alcohol: Is it safe to combine? - Leaf Remedys

It’s been said that people make a lot of poor decisions when they’re drinking.

But is taking CBD oil with alcohol one of them?

Let’s find out…

CBD oil and alcohol: do they mix?

There’s still a lot we don’t understand about CBD’s medicinal properties. But even as a natural therapeutic, scientists are still exploring what actually happens in the human body when we combine CBD with alcohol.

Here’s what they’ve discovered so far...

Combining alcohol and CBD can significantly decrease the damaging effects alcohol has on the liver [¹]. It’s also been shown to lower blood alcohol levels. But it does have notable effects on our mood and overall behavior as well [²].

This is because alcohol is known for lowering your inhibitions, as it’s best known as a relaxant or sedative.

Why do you think comedy clubs want their audience to be a bit tipsy? The more intoxicated they are, the funnier the comedian suddenly becomes.

It’s also the perfect antidote for performing your favorite song at karaoke, without stage fright.

Now imagine what happens when you combine CBD and alcohol together…

According to James Giordano, a neurology professor and biochemistry at Georgetown University Medical Center, “On CBD, you’re very chill, very lighthearted, mellow. The alcohol will make that more intense…”

He also stated:

“The more you drink, the more CBD you’re taking, you get a potentiated effect that's greater than the effect of either alone. The level of intoxication is going to be greater: greater loss of control, inhibition, motor coordination, and that becomes problematic.”

For example, a “happy drunk” on CBD becomes even happier than before. An “angry or violent drunk” on CBD may not be quite as angry or violent as before.

So could it be that combining CBD and alcohol is actually a good thing?

CBD for alcohol withdrawal

Alcoholism is a severe issue in America. More than 18 million adults suffer from the overwhelming symptoms associated with drinking and/or trying to stop [³].

These symptoms often include:

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures
  • ETC.

But it seems there are a slew of studies that confirm CBD may help with the list above.

In fact, one study found that CBD helped reduce the symptoms associated with alcohol addiction and withdrawals [].

Other studies show that alcohol-addicted rats who consumed CBD were least likely to relapse or even desire alcohol [].

Finally, another study involving 24 smokers, found that CBD greatly reduced the amount of cigarettes smoked by 40% []. While this study has nothing to do with alcohol, it does demonstrate the therapeutic effects CBD can have on addiction.

CBD oil and alcohol: the bottom line

The truth is, more studies are needed regarding how combining CBD and alcohol affects the human body.

For now, the studies we do have are quite compelling and thought-provoking.

This means you can breathe a little easier if you decide to take a dose of high quality CBD oil after a few drinks.

Just be sure you only purchase CBD oil from a reputable hemp company.
